Brewers Hill Door Installation

How to choose a Front Door

The front door is the first and last thing your guests will see, so you want it to make an impression, but more importantly, you want it to keep your home warm or cool and your family safe.
When purchasing your exterior door, you must first consider the style, colour, and size of your entryway. If you’re planning on fitting a new door, then you need to choose a door that is able to support its weight. For exterior door styles such as panel doors, you must also think about if you want to buy the panel and have the hardware to match, or if you’d rather buy the hardware separately and have them match your exterior door’s finish. There are many options to choose from when deciding on a front door. Learn the facts so you can choose the best one for your needs. There are many options to choose from when deciding on a front door. Learn the facts so you can choose the best one for your needs.

Wood

These days, many people have turned to more durable materials for their entry doors, including solid wood doors with glass panes and hardwoods. A more common use for internal wood doors is for pantry and utility rooms, as well as closets. If you want a more modern look in these areas of your home, consider installing sliding steel doors instead of wooden ones.

One of the first things to consider when choosing a wood door is the type of wood it’s made from. MDF or medium-density fiberboard is one of the least expensive types of wood for an entry door. It has a very smooth, shiny appearance, but is incredibly durable and can be sanded and painted. Birch is another popular wood for exterior doors. This type of wood is usually carved into elaborate designs. It has a very high density and is extremely dense enough to resist warping and distortion.

While it’s rare, some wood doors can be hollow. Many hollow doors are made of pine, although a few are made of exotic species of woods, including ebony. Some hollow doors are filled with air to prevent expansion during hot weather, while others may have solid wood frames that require no maintenance at all. Solid wood doors can add charm and character to a house as long as they are properly installed, and you can purchase them from any hardware store for around $500.

Vinyl

Like steel doors, vinyl doors are typically inexpensive and are commonly used for screen doors and storm doors. However, they only have a life expectancy of around 20 years. Vinyl doors are typically hollow, and with the right amount of force, can crack, making them less secure than steel or wood doors.

Steel

They can be custom-built to your specifications, although you should take note that steel doors are typically heavier than their wood-grain counterparts. If you’re looking for a cheaper option, you may opt for a steel frame. A steel frame has a smooth, flat surface and a metal lath along the frame’s edge, which allows for sturdiness compared to wood-grain lath. Metal front doors have insulated foam within the panels and steel on either side and are the safest of the three options.
One of the main problems with a metal door, however, is denting which’s hard to repair. This can result in the need for a whole door replacement.

Fibre Glass

Are made from a core of rigid insulation, clad with a fibre-reinforced polymer, and covered with an artificial grain to make them look like wood. Manufacturers have gotten so good at mimicking the look and feel of wood that you’d be mistaken for thinking you were handling a solid oak, pine or mahogany door, every time you reach for the handle. These panelled doors can take a beating without incurring dents. Not only are fibreglass doors more durable than their wooden counterparts, but they can also be stained in order to achieve the same traditional look of wood. And thanks to an insulated core, fibreglass doors give added protection from the elements. Keep in mind that fibreglass front doors may cost a bit more than wood, but the long-term energy savings can help offset the difference.

Most Popular Front Door Styles

Doors are important functional components of a building or home. A front door is either a stationary or hinged barrier that permits ingress into and exit from an enclosure. The primary function of a door is to offer safety by restricting access to the main entrance door. Doors also add aesthetic value to a property by framing a view and thereby preventing unwanted access by guests or other people. Thankfully today there are a variety of styles from which to choose — ensuring you’ll find just the look and design you desire. What’s more, each of the styles listed below should have options available in wood and fibreglass — the two most commonly used door materials. You may also find metal options — another often sought-after material. Here’s a quick look at some of the most popular styles on the market.

Modern

Straight, sleek lines are also a frequently found component in modern-style front doors yet they are used in a fashion that separates them from Craftsman-style doors. Additionally, you may find blocked or square raised panels or panes of frosted or translucent glass. Minimalistic in their manner — yet often large in size — the hardware seen on modern doors tends to follow the same style of clean lines. Modern style doors also have clean, straight lines. However, they are even more minimalistic and simplistic in design, and often larger in size. They may sometimes have blocked or square raised panels or panes with frosted or translucent glass. The hardware on modern doors also tends to be large and follow the same clean lines.
Unlike the vertical glass panels that are found on other door styles, modern doors very often have horizontal panes of glass.

Traditional

Traditional style doors usually feature raised panels in any number from two to twelve. They also usually feature glass inserts, some with scrollwork or coloured panes. Classic-style doors may feature raised panels in any number from two to twelve. They may also feature glass inserts with scrollwork or coloured panes. These styles are traditionally available in wood, metal and fibreglass options that are pre-hung and ready to install after purchase. Custom options for traditional doors are also available. This can be especially helpful if you are looking to achieve a particular design or if you live in a home that does not have standard size door openings.

Craftsman

Hugely popular for many homes—from cottages to spacious mountain retreats — Craftsman style doors are made from wood or fibreglass and often feature straight lines with a Shaker-inspired look. Craftsman doors could feature one window at the top with stained glass or black- or wood-outlined panes and two or three rectangular-shaped raised panels across the bottom. Another popular option for Craftsman doors is a large glass insert (in the same style as mentioned above) that offers a more generous view of the outdoors. As with the other styles, custom options are available.

Rustic

Frequently seen on cabins and homes that feature wood, stone, or brick exteriors, rustic-style doors are often made of wood. They may be arched or in the traditional rectangular form. Because many rustic doors have a thickness and a demeanour that suggests hardiness, you may find bulky, oversized hardware that accompanies them. Raised panels, scored lines and clear glass are other features commonly found on rustic doors.

Arched

If you are looking to add some old-world charm to your home, then you should consider arched doors. The arch-shaped door gives a feeling of depth and space and perfect for any modern home. An arched front door or a curved arch-shaped door makes a statement that will add elegance to any home.

You can also use arched doors to add warmth and character to your rustic doors. If you have an arched door, then you can make it appear more traditional by leaving the top uncarved. The feel that you will get from using arched doors is going to be a rustic feel. You can even use these arched-shaped windows to create a focal point for your entryway.

These are just a few ideas that you can incorporate to create the right look for your exterior and entryway. With a little bit of planning, you can design a great exterior and entryway that will make you the envy of everyone. You do not have to be an experienced designer to be able to create this effect. All you need is the right plan and the ability to follow through with your vision. You do not have to pay an outrageous amount of money in order to be able to have an attractive exterior. If you are willing to invest a little bit of time, then you should be able to find a professional arched-glass designer who can provide you with all of your design needs.
